Us vs. Them
Because we provide both Commercial AND Residential SealCoating, Paving & Asphalt Repair Services (as well as other Specialty Property Maintenance Services). We have found that many people do not compare apples to apples when looking for a seal coating contractor.
There is a difference...
There are many fly by night scammers, traveling gypsies (who follow the weather/seasons) and weekend warriors out there offering seal coating and paving services. Most of these do not use commercial grade sealers, or asphalt. Most do not have the specialized equipment, material tanks or the training required to ensure that your property receives the very best of care.
Many of these fly by night scammers and weekend warriors can be deceiving. They may appear to be professional, however MANY of these people use cheap, watered down sealer (some even add used motor oil or vinegar to what they are selling as sealer) which will still look ok for a month or so, but then it begins to fail, and fail quickly..!! You will see it washing off or wearing off rapidly..!! A phone call a month or two later will not be returned, and most likely the number will be disconnected.
Another tell tail sign of a fly by night scammer, a traveling gypsy or a weekend warrior is the practice of going door to door, knocking and asking if you want a "special deal" as they have extra material left over from another job in the area. This is a VERY COMMON tactic used in the asphalt and seal coating industry.
With regards to asphalt, professional contractors buy daily what their requirements are for that day. When they have extra, they almost always have a small job that they have been waiting to put into the schedule. Quality asphalt is expensive, so experienced contractors purchase what is required. We do not "fill up the truck, then go out and try sell it door to door.)
With seal coating, on rare occasion we may talk to neighbors of a client whose driveway we have just completed. This is usually in neighborhoods where we have been contacted by someone on the HOA Board who has invited us to the community as they have sent out "Courtesy" Letters or Notices informing the homeowner that they need to have their driveway sealed. (or their asphalt repaired... or their roof cleaned) When invited by the HOA we will occasionally knock on some doors, but usually we just hang one of our door hangers with our contact information on your door.
Some additional things to consider...
The contractor you select should be Licensed & Insured. Any legitimate contractor will be more than happy to show you a copy of their license and insurance.
Also, any legitimate contractor should be more than happy to provide you with corporate, commercial or professional references. (And more than just one or two..!!) Providing corporate, commercial or professional references is the industry norm, most contractors will typically NOT provide residential references. Residential customer names, addresses and personal information are not shared to protect their privacy.
Lastly, we strongly encourage you to ALWAYS get a formal written estimate (not some price scribbled down on the back of a business card or a piece of paper). Normally an estimate will be on company letterhead which includes all company contact information.. Again those that don't, should cause you great concern.
